Pasture Raised Chickens
At KD Pastures we believe in raising our animals outdoors and on pasture. Our chickens are no exception as they spend the majority of their lives on pasture where they are able to forage and scratch for goodies while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
WHY Pasture Raised chicken
THE HEALTHY CHOICE
Pasture Raised Chickens have two important distinctions from factory farm raised chickens.
First is the health of the birds. Since our birds are not packed into crowded barns, we do not have to administer antibiotics or vaccines to keep the chickens healthy. Instead we focus on the proven, albeit seemingly-forgotten, process of providing fresh air, clean living conditions, clean water and high quality feed for our chickens to ensure healthy birds.
And second, by providing our chickens access to well managed pasture and high quality feed we are able to produce a more nutrient dense chicken with higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins, A and E. With good management practices up to thirty percent of the birds' diet can consist of grasses and foraged goodies.
These differences allow us to produce a healthier bird and thereby healthier chicken for your family.
How we do it
At 3 weeks of age our chicks are moved out of the brooder and into one of our homemade chicken tractors.
These movable pens are specially designed to provide the protection from predators and weather events that our chickens need while they enjoy life in the open pastures. Each pen is moved daily to fresh pasture ensuring the birds always have fresh grass and goodies to eat and a clean area to lay down.
We take great care to ensure that there is always clean water and fresh feed available and easily accessible by each chicken.
